Chinese Phone without IMEI number will be banned in India from 30 Apr 09. IMEI number stands for International Mobile Equipment Identity. IMEI number is a unique number which identifies each phone and can be traced.

This has been done considering security in view which might be used by terrorist. An IMEI number is a unique 15 digit number that identifies the handset and this will help the law enforcement official to easily monitor and track phones if suspected for doing any unlawful activities.

Department of Telecom has asked all the operators in India to follow the guidelines and acquire the necessary equipments to track these phones by 15 of April and discontinue their services by 30 April 09.

It is expected that around 30 million mobile phones or 8 percent of all mobiles in the country, are therefore expected to become useless by the end of the month.

TIPS: You can check your IMEI number by typing *#06# on your mobile phone.
